A rookie police officer shot and killed a 14-year-old boy on
a street early Sunday morning after the boy refused to drop his gun and pointed
it at them, authorities said.
Shaaliver Douse died of a single gunshot to his jaw after
the confrontation in the Melrose section of the Bronx, New York
How it happened
The New York Police Department officers arrived at a scene
around 3am where Douse had been trying to shoot a man who was running across the
streets.
The uniformed officers identified themselves as police and ordered him
to drop his weapon, authorities said. When he pointed his gun at them, one of
the officers shot him, police said. The teenager was pronounced dead at the
scene.
The two officers involved in the shooting joined the department
in January. Their ages are 26 and 26.
They were stationed in the neighbourhood as part of an
Operation Impact team monitoring the high-crime area. After the shooting the
officers were taken to Jacobi Hospital and treated for tinnitus and trauma,
authorities said.
The boy's black semi-automatic firearm was recovered at the
scene, according to an official statement from the police department.
The man Douse was firing at is still at large, the newspaper
reported. Authorities are reviewing security camera footage to help apprehend
the man police say was fleeing from the scene as they arrived.
Douse had been in trouble with the law before. He was
charged in May with attempted murder after a 15-year-old boy was shot in a
Bronx neighbourhood where Douse lived.
That shooting took place 2 miles from where Douse was later
shot to death.
Douse was also charged with assault, criminal possession of
a weapon and menacing in the incident.
The charges were later dropped, according to News 12 Long
Island. At the time, prosecutors did not give a reason but said the case was
pending further investigation.
