Their Royal Majesties Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I Dein
of Agbor (pictured left), Alhaji Dr Ado Abdullahi Bayero Emir of Kano (centre)
and the late Agbogidi James Ikechukwu Anyasi II, former Obi of the Idumuje Unor
(right) seem every bit the archetypal African kings. But today they serve as
little more than living repositories of Nigeria's enormous cultural heritage. They
may have been stripped off their constitutional powers since 1963, but traditional
kings in Nigeria still serve as middle men between the people and the
government.
Photographer George Osodi was given unprecedented access to
palaces and throne rooms across the vast African nation to create a stunning
set of portraits due to be exhibited at London's Bermondsey Project in October. See more pictures of Africa's great kings
