Female Inmates to Be Checked for Pregnancy, as Sex Scandal Rocks Owerri Prison

Female inmates of the Owerri Prisons in Nigeria are been checked for pregnancy at the Federal Medical Centre in the capital city of Imo State, to ascertain their status, following reports of alleged sex scandal that rocked the prison.

The pregnancy tests became imperative after a particular inmate was allegedly discovered to be pregnant a few months after her conviction. According to an undisclosed source, the parents of the particular inmate who came to visit their convicted daughter were shocked to see her in advanced stage of pregnancy.

“When the girl was brought to the prison, no one noticed that she was pregnant until few months later when her parents came to visit her. They were shocked to find that she was pregnant. I think that is why the management is conducting the pregnancy test,” the source said.

All affected female prison inmates have been taken to the hospital on the directive of the Comptroller General of Prisons, Zakari Ibrahim.

According to the investigation by LEADERSHIP, the Comptroller General sent a delegation to the Owerri prison shortly after reports of the alleged sexual relationship between some unnamed prison officials and the inmates were made public.

Mr. Isaiah Amaliri, the State Prison Controller, did not give any precise comments on this story.
