Ever wondered who directs you to go to “cashier no 3 please” while you are on a queue in many of the stores scattered around London and beyond? Or maybe you just can’t be bothered.
The man behind the voice is revealed as Terry Green, 53, (pictured
left) a father-of-one businessman (and queuing expert) from
Stratford-upon-Avon. Mr Green, whose voice guides an estimated 30m customers to
vacant tills in 8,000 stores every month, says his voice is often recognised if
he is using his mobile phone while waiting in a long, automated queue.
Terry Green's voice directs 30m UK shoppers to available
tills each month. You hear his voice at Marks &Spencer, Sainsbury's, Post
Office and Boots. He co-founded Qmatic which invented 'customer flow management'
system. The queuing system now governs a quarter of the world's people
For travellers on the London Underground the voice of Emma
Clarke, 42, (Pictured right)who tells passengers to 'mind the gap' and warns
them which stations are coming up next will all be too familiar.
Her voice has been used on the Tube since 1999 but in 2007
her contract for future announcements was terminated by staff who felt she had
criticised them in an interview.
A professional voiceover artist from Cheshire, Ms Clarke is
also the voice of many car sat-navs.
